How to help a dog suffering from separation anxiety

Separation anxiety is the response some dogs have to being apart from their owner. A number of things can bring on this state of panic including a change in routine, suddenly being left alone after spending long periods of time with their owner, a traumatic event such as abuse or time spent in a shelter, or even just time spent in a boarding kennel.
